When Infinity Ward released Modern Warfare 2, there were 105 unique employees. (103 if you don't count the two who are listed as Activision) according to the end game credits. I have received word that the writer, Jesse Stern and his assistant Aaron Tracy were not formal employees of Infinity Ward, as well as confirmation that the two ATVI people were not as well. So that would make the actual IW employee count at the end of Modern Warfare 2 to be 101 people.

As of August 13th 2010, 48 have been terminated or resigned and are denoted with a strike. I will note that it appears 2 of these 48 people left before this rift between Activision and Infinity Ward went down. (See update 1 for April 28th, 2010 for more info.)

Information sourced by Kotaku, PC Gamer UK's video, G4TV and tips with confirmations.

There may be some typos. Send any corrections, updates, tips (with supporting links or evidence that can be verified, if possible) here.

For those of you interested in why I am maintaining this list, read about it here.

Updates (with most recent being left at the top) will now be found at the bottom of the list in reverse order. It was getting cluttered up here and I never intented this page to be pretty but I will try to make it slightly more readable. I will leave the percentage breakdown of Infinity Ward departments affected at the top of the page.

(8 of 22) 36% of artists/concept artists are gone
(4 of 10) 40% of animators/technical animators/mocap people are gone
(17 of 23) 74% of designers and scripters are gone
(12 of 15) 80% of engineers are gone
(5 of 5) 100% of writers are gone
(13 of 16) 82% of leads/directors from these departments combined are gone

AUGUST 13th, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Thanks to a tip letting me know that Mocap Integrator Mario Perez announced via a tweet last month that he has left IW. He is number 48. Thanks, tipster!

Following that up, he also updated his LinkedIn profile to say he is working at Respawn, making him number 38 there.

I can't be online 24/7, so I appreciate others keeping me in the loop. Any new information? Send it my way! Also, if the page doesn't load for you, it's probably my hosting plan. Just try again in a few minutes. On shared servers, you are at the whim of any runaway scripts someone else might be running that might eat up a crap ton of processing power.

JULY 25th, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Recieved a tip that designer Alex Roycewicz updated his LinkedIn profile indicating he is now at Respawn. That makes him number 36 to join. Thanks, tipster!

Also, during a random check of various online sources, engineer Jon Davis updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate he is now at Respawn. He is number 37 to join them.

JULY 19th, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Received a tip on last Friday that William Cho is at least number 35 over at Respawn, according to his Twitter bio.

JULY 10th, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Received a tip that designer Alexander Roycewicz left sometime last week. He would be number 47. No word yet on where he will be moving on to. No confirming sources yet, but a previous tip provided by them was accurate. Thanks, tipster!

JULY 5th, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Long time no update! Anyways this past week I got 2 tips, engineer Jon Davis has left back on June 21st and artist William Cho mentioned on his Twitter account that he is no longer with IW. That makes them numbers 45 and 46, respectively. Thanks for the tipsters for that!

Also, designer Jake Keating is at least number 34 over at Respawn.

Also, I remember reading a couple of weeks ago on Kotaku that IW are hiring. I'm sure they always were hiring these past few months, given the situation. However, they must have really started ramping up because they bought banner ads to announce they were hiring. Either they are not finding (enough) quality candidates or the quality candidates are just not applying given what they heard about working there.

JUNE 19th, 2010 - UPDATE 1: According to his LinkedIn profile, artist Todd Sue is number 33 to join Respawn.

JUNE 5, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Designer Geoffrey Smith is number 31 to join Respawn, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Artist Richard N. Smith announced on his Facebook wall that he "Respawned" on Wednesday, making him number 32 to join Respawn.

MAY 24, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Received confirmation as well as a second tip about engineering lead Richard Baker who left last week. He also updated his Facebook profile to indicate that he has joined Respawn. He is number 43 to leave and number 30 to join Respawn. That leaves 4 names still working with IW who are part of the Infinity Ward Employee Group suing ATVI: artist William Cho, animator Chance Glasco, audio designer Stephen Miller and animator Lei Yang.

Also recieved confirmation that executive assistant Cathie Ichige left as well. She is number 44.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a tip/confirmed information for me!

MAY 23, 2010 - UPDATE 2: Just received a tip regarding two more people who may have left. I am digging around for some confirmation to see if I should add them to the list or not.

Also, missed this one - John Haggerty mentioned that he is joining Respawn according to Facebook. He is number 27 (29 when you include West and Zampella.)

MAY 23, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Have slowed my checking of my usual places for updates the past week because it looked like things were slowing down. However, I did receive a tip this morning that 3 more have left IW as of Friday. Thanks, tipster!

Number 40: Artist Richard Smith, confirmed by an update on his LinkedIn profile.

Number 41: Designer Geoffrey Smith, confirmed by an update on his LinkedIn profile, lists himself as "bum."

Number 42: Artist Todd Sue, mentioned he was unemployed on his Facebook profile.

All three are part of the Infinity Ward Employee Group who are suing Activision. This leaves only five names involved in that lawsuit who still work at Infinity Ward. Those five are engineer Richard Baker, artist William Cho, animator Chance Glasco, audio designer Stephen Miller and animator Lei Yang.

MAY 16, 2010 - UPDATE 1: No new departures I am aware of, but two more respawn over at Respawn.

Engineer Jiesang Song is number 25 to join Respawn, according to Song's LinkedIn profile.

Artist Joel Emslie is number 26 to join Respawn, according to his LinkedIn profile.

MAY 13, 2010 - UPDATE 2: Nothing new but here is some speculation fodder. Unconfirmed report that Raven Software tasked to designing Call of Duty: Black Ops map packs. If this winds up being true, the question is, why? Treyarch, one of the studios under Activision who deal with the Call of Duty franchise, are working on the Black Ops game that is slated for release in November this year. So why aren't Treyarch developing the map packs for their game? Perhaps Activision want to shift Treyarch people over to the Modern Warfare 3 game ASAP to bolster what remains of Infinity Ward and meet a release cycle for 2011 rather than have them work on extra maps? Again, this is all pure speculation on my part. I am not a game developer but it just seems "off" that they would bring in another studio when there is still five months and change for Treyarch to finish Black Ops. I've never heard of anything else like this before.

Also, if this is true, that would mean Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and now Raven Software all simultaneously working on something related to the Call of Duty franchise. That squeezing sound you hear is Activision milking a franchise dry.

MAY 13, 2010 - UPDATE 1: No new news about any resignations. But engineer Joel Gompert has joined Respawn according to his Facebook profile. He is number 24 to follow West and Zampella. Thanks to my tipsters for this one.

MAY 12, 2010 - UPDATE 1: No new news about any resignations, but I am following up on a tip about another ex-IW person starting at Respawn.

MAY 11, 2010 - UPDATE 1: I am not hearing anything about new resignations. Has the bleeding stopped at IW?

Designer Roger Abrahamsson updated his LinkedIn profile to become employee 22 at Respawn.

Lead FX Robert Gaines updated his LinkedIn profile to become employee 23 at Respawn. With leaders West and Zampella, Respawn is now composed of 25% of Infinity Ward's MW2 team.

MAY 9, 2010 - UPDATE 1: So, just received confirmation that sysadmin Drew McCoy is joining Respawn tomorrow. He is number 21 to join Respawn. Obviously a company with at least 23 people need someone to take care of the hardware and network infrastructure. (Thanks to the tipper and to the person who confirmed it.)

MAY 9, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Still waiting on confirmation on Respawn's newest member from yesterday.

In other news, members of Infinity Ward (what's left of it) were supposed to host a Playstation Home event for Modern Warfare 2 yesterday. But things didn't go as planned.

According to a Home representative over on the Playstation forums: "Unfortunately, Infinity Ward will not be able to host tonight's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 event, as previously announced (they will reschedule for a later date though, so no worries!) We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we promise to do everything we can to make sure tonight's event is a fun time for all. To that end, our team will be standing in as hosts, and will be launching into multiplayer sessions of the new Modern Warfare 2 maps (Bailout, Salvage, Storm, Crash, and Overgrown)."

I'm guessing, and this is pure speculation on my part, that there are very few people left at Infinity Ward willing to represent IW at such an event. Even if one or two of the people who were scheduled for this event had a sudden emergency come up, (or they recently resigned,) I'm sure they would have other representative on hand, or could find a replacement, if IW was at full capacity. If anyone who is left at Infinity Ward is reading this and wants to let me know the real reason this event didn't go down as planned, feel free to correct me.

MAY 7, 2010 - UPDATE 2: Received an unconfirmed tip about another joining Respawn on Monday. I am following up this lead right now and I hope to have confirmation soon. Although, given the number of people struck off this list who have moved to Respawn, I have very little reason to doubt the validity of this tip.

MAY 7, 2010 - UPDATE 1: It's been a little quiet lately and I have no real updates. However Activision head Bobby Kotick recently addressed investors regarding the mass exodus of Infinity Ward.

"Since we terminated the two executives at Infinity Ward, approximately 35 others have resigned and it is likely that a few more people will leave, as well."

So West and Zampella + the two who left before all this went down + the approximate 35 mentioned by Kotick brings the number to 39, meaning that my count of departures is pretty spot on.

Mohammad Alavi is the 20th person to follow West and Zampella to Respawn. According to his LinkedIn profile he is calling himself, "Senior Map Monkey at Respawn Entertainment LLC."

MAY 5, 2010 - UPDATE 2: Read from a Eurogamer article that Kristin Cotterell is officially the HR and recruitment manager for Respawn. She is employee number 19 (21 with West and Zampella.)

MAY 5, 2010 - UPDATE 1: I wasn't online a whole lot yesterday (too busy with Super Street Fighter 4, ha!) so I didn't do a lot of digging around for updates.

But I just discovered designer Christopher Dionne updated his LinkedIn status to unemployed. He is number 38. That leaves 8 people on the Infinity Ward Employees Group lawsuit who still work at Infinity Ward. I wonder how long until we can start calling them the EX-Infinity Ward Employees Group.

Systems administrator Drew McCoy also updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect Infinity Ward as in the past. He is number 39.

MAY 3, 2010 - UPDATE 2: I received verification of the 2 names I was gathering info for and they are both still under employment with Infinity Ward. Looks like it was nothing.

MAY 3, 2010 - UPDATE 1: No new departures since my last update, however I am following up on a couple of names that have caught my eye through my usual digging around. It could very well be nothing. Trying to get some confirmation from one of my sources. I will update this space with any information as soon as I find out.

MAY 1, 2010 - UPDATE 1: It's the weekend and I don't expect to hear much of anything until Monday at the earliest. Expect it to be quiet until at least then.

I will say today could be the official first day for Respawn, if Jon Shiring's tweet from last week is any indication.

APRIL 30, 2010 - UPDATE 3: Just received a tip that engineering lead Earl Hammon, Jr has left. He is number 37 to depart IW. Notified via a tip (thanks!) as well as confirmed via his Linkedin profile.

APRIL 30, 2010 - UPDATE 2: Received a tip that Art Lead Robert Gaines is leaving/left Infinity Ward today. He is number 36. Thanks for the tip! Since he is part of the Infinity Ward Employees Group, that makes 9 people in that group who are still at Infinity Ward.

Also Brad Allen announced, via Facebook, that he is joining Respawn. He is the 18th to join Respawn. (20th if you include West and Zampella.) Thanks for the tip!

APRIL 30, 2010 - UPDATE 1: A new day. No departures yet, but the day is young. But considering there are still 10 names from the Infinity Ward Employee Group lawsuit that appear to still be at Infinity Ward, that might change.

Respawn's newest hire - designer Preston Glenn, via his Linkedin page. That makes him number 17, not including founders West and Zampella.

Also, a big shout out to those who helped confirm yesterday's single departure, Joel Gompert, in case any of you missed it.

APRIL 29, 2010 - UPDATE 4: Received another anonymous tip mentioning engineer Joel Gompert as the one who resigned today. I am going to mark him as number 35. If I hear anything to the contrary, I will retract this statement.

APRIL 29, 2010 - UPDATE 3: I have been given the name that may refer to the departure George Broussard tweeted about and am looking for verification before I release it. I am hoping that one of my more prolific tipsters is reading this. If so, please contact me per usual and I would appreciate it if you would let me know one way or the other if I could email you directly for confirmation. Thanks!

APRIL 29, 2010 - UPDATE 2: Heard that another programmer left Infinity Ward today. I will see if I can find a name. If you know who it is, send tips here.

APRIL 29, 2010 - UPDATE 1: No change in roster today, as of yet, but according to Zied Rieke's Linkedin profile, he has moved onto Respawn. He would be number 14 to have followed Jason West and Vince Zampella to Respawn.

Also Charlie Wiederhold - number 15 to Respawn? I'm going to say yes. His Linkedin profile makes a pun filled reference, "...host migrating... ...respawning..." (Bolded for emphasis.) Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about this one.

Number 16 to Respawn - Chad Grenier, according to Linkedin.

Including Respawn founders West and Zampella, at least 18 people are now at Respawn. That's over 50% of the known Infinity Ward departures as of this update.

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 7: Looks like Sean Slayback will be "Respawning" if his Twitter post is any indication. That makes 13 who have followed Jason West and Vince Zampella to Respawn.

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 6: Someone requested that I include the names of ex-Infinity Ward employees confirmed to have moved to Respawn Entertainment. The names, which I have sourced from G4TV will be noted beside their name. As an added bonus, I will make note of where each person has moved on to besides Respawn, where available (Bruce Ferriz to Big Red Button Entertainment, for example.)

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 5: Once again, props to the tipster who has provided me with the bulk of my updates. No confirming sources, but since the other tips provided by this anonymous source haven't been disputed, I am going to cross them off the list.
Number 32 - Engineer Chad Barb
Number 33 - Engineer Jiesang Song
Number 34 - Designer Roger Abrahamsson
Previously mentioned is Jake Keating and it sounds like these are the 4 referred to in George Broussard's twitter post. I also updated the percentage breakdown in my previous update.

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 4: According to George Broussard's twitter post, 4 people have left today. I am aware of 2 of them thanks to being sent anonymous tips. Anyone know who the other 2 are?

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 3: Number 31 - Just got a tip that Jake Keating announced via Facebook that he is leaving. Thanks for the tip, you know who you are!

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 2: percentage breakdown of departments affected moved permanently to the top.

APRIL 28, 2010 - UPDATE 1: Moving the old updates at the bottom of the list. Number 29 - Engineer John Haggerty left today and announced it on Facebook, according to one tip. Number 30 - executive assistant Carly Gillis left IW about 1 year ago. This was the second tip that mentioned her name, so I will include her name here for the sake of completeness. I should mention that Mike Seal, who I struck off the list yesterday, also left before this brouhaha went down.

In possibly related news, CEO and president of Activision's publishing division Mike Griffith resigned today. No reason was given.

APRIL 27, 2010 - UPDATE 5: According to Sean Slayback's tweet, he resigned today. He would be number 28. Could this be who George Broussard was referring to?

APRIL 27, 2010 - UPDATE 4: In related news, "Infinity Ward Employee Group" Files Lawsuit Against Activision Over Unpaid Royalties, Alleges Devs Held "Hostage" -- Personal note: *facepalm* at Activision

APRIL 27, 2010 - UPDATE 3: Wow! George Broussard of 3D Realms tweeted that there was another who left today in response to my list. Don't know who it is yet.

APRIL 27, 2010 - UPDATE 2: QA Manager Mike Seal updated his Linkedin profile as Infinity Ward being in the past (ending March 2010, according to the time frame.) There is no mention of where he will be moving on to. He would be number 27. Still looking for confirmation on the second person, but I can say they were not part of the development team.

APRIL 27, 2010 - UPDATE 1: I've received an unconfirmed tip that 2 more have left Infinity Ward. I am unsure when they have left. If anyone can provide some confirmation along with any updates, I will be sure to update this list. Thanks!
